You’re skin is screaming for help. In my previous blog post, “Normal? Dry? Oily?Combination? Sensitive?”, I listed out information to find your skin type. That’s the most important step to help narrow down your search for skincare or makeup products. Before going into a brief description of products to look for, here’s a list of things that help prevent issues with the skin. Important to: Drink plenty of water Do NOT pick your face Keep bedding clean Clean your makeup brushes & skincare tools STOP touching your face with dirty hands Wash your makeup off before bed All routines should include the basics: cleanser, exfoliator, toner, moisturizer, and sunscreen. But there’s specific types dedicated to you. Normal Skin: Since this skin has a well balance between water and oil, a gentle cleanser is suitable. Use a hydrating exfoliator with AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid) or BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid) included in the ingredients which you should only do 2-3 times a week. Your moisturizer and sunscreen (30 SPF+) should be lightweight. Oily Skin: Your focus is on the overproduction of sebum and large pores. This skin requires a twice a day wash with a gentle gel or soap-free cleanser. Use a lightweight oil-free cream or gel base moisturizer. Avoid anything with Alcohol and mineral oil as an ingredient. Combination Skin: Use a gel cleanser or one that is gentle with a balancing formula. Remember combination is a mix of dry and oily (T-Zone) skin so you would want serums that are hydrating but also mattifies your T-Zone. Your moisturizer should be a lightweight liquid or gel lotion and apply an oil-free sunscreen with no shine. Dry Skin: All products should be hydrating to help bring a water and oil balance to the skin. For a wash use an oil cleanser or balm. Find serums or essences with a boost of water in the ingredients. If you can, invest in a humidifier which will help with the loss of moisture in the air. Your moisturizer should be creamy same as your sunscreen. Sensitive skin: Reframe from using any harsh products and fragrance free. Use a gentle wash and exfoliators that won’t irritate the skin. Best way to start is cleansing your skin with a gentle cleanser and leaving it bare (apply no additional products) for 30 minutes. Then examine your skin closely for dryness, sensitivity, oily, size of pores, and texture. Normal Skin: This skin has little to no imperfections with a combination of small to medium size pores. The texture and complexion are even meaning there’s a healthy balance of water and oil. Dry Skin: The skin usually feels tight and pores are small. Texture and complexation of the skin is either dull, rough, scaly, or flaky. There can be some irritation or redness. This type can cause fine lines and wrinkles faster. Combination Skin: The skin is normal to dry in some areas and oily in the others, like the T-Zone (forehead, nose, and chin) where the pores can appear larger. Frequent blemishes and blackheads can appear in the T-Zone and dry spots in the cheeks. Oily Skin: Skin is shiny and thick complexion with large pores. Causes frequent blemishes, acne, and blackheads due to clogging of the pores. The oils are produced by overactive sebaceous or oil-producing glands. This type shows less signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles. Sensitive Skin: Skin is easily irritated which can become itchy, dry, red, and burning. This can a happen due to some cosmetics, skincare products, environment, or medications. Now skin changes over time due to aging, dieting, sun exposure, stress, weather, water intake, medication/health, genetics, and other factors. But understanding where your skin is at currently and what’s causing it can help you figure out what products to look for.
